  Prologue

The ground shook as though hit by an earthquake, rocking the enormous stone structure. Two hundred thousand creatures from every corner of the galaxy stomped their feet in unison. A shower of crud rained down. Sawdust, dirt, dead critter parts. Kyra shook her head and ran her fingers through her cropped hair, eyeing the massive rough-hewn beams in the ceiling suspiciously. Judging from the size of them, they’d been hacked from a tree a thousand years old or more. And if the stories she’d heard about this place were true, they’d been supporting the fat asses of bloodthirsty spectators in the tiers above her head for ten times longer.

“Ghul. Ghul. Ghul.” They’d taken up a chant. Shouting out the single word over and over in time with their stomping. Even deep in the bowels of the arena, thunderous waves of sound swept over her. Threatened to drown her.

She didn’t need the Tellex chip behind her ear to translate. Kyra fought the panic. Giving in to fear would kill her faster than any opponent.

It really was ironic. Beings who couldn’t agree on a way to divide up the vast expanses of the galaxy and live in peace had no problem learning a common language and uniting for a common goal here in the Arena of Tanis Major. Their harsh, guttural language had evolved in this place. One spoken nowhere else in the known Universe. A language where the cry of victory was a call for death.

“Girls, girls, girls! Today you are all stars! Are we ready to face our adoring fans?” Bophe strode into the room, sounding jovial. His slave Ceres followed, her small frame struggling under the weight of a huge jar of wine. “Drinks all around,” he declared, motioning to her.

Kyra had spent enough time around her master to know he was a shrewd businessman. He chose the outfits his slaves wore when they competed with an eye to pleasing the masses. The uglier females in his stable were covered head to toe, while the ones he considered attractive fought in scraps of clothing that ended up being slashed away during the match. Based on the uniform she’d been given, Bophe must have figured his customers would enjoy the sight of a nearly naked female human.

She wore flat sandals tied on by leather thongs around her calves and a skimpy sarong-type garment made from the smooth, supple hide of an animal she didn’t recognize. Though she wore it slung as low as possible around her hips, it barely covered her private parts. Kyra wasn’t sure if the creature it came from was really such a bright-red color or whether the hide had been dyed to call the crowd’s attention to the occasional glimpses they’d get of her pussy and ass, naked under the tiny skirt.

For her upper body, he’d given her a deep bronze metallic halter to tie around her neck and behind her back. A pair of gold bands in the shape of serpents wound around her biceps, and a wider one covered the iron slave collar on her neck. Beneath the halter one final serpent, this one two-headed, ran across her back then around to crisscross in the center of her chest. When her top came off, spectators would see the snake curling around both her tits with its twin jaws clamped onto her swollen, red nipples.

Bophe turned in a circle, displaying the jagged scars raking his face and the empty eye socket to the entire room. “I earned my title of Master of the Arena of Tanis Major battling creatures more vicious than anything dwelling in the depths of the seventh hell. I fought, just as each of you will today. Each time I bet not only my entire fortune but my very life. Now I own this arena – and all of you. Fight hard, fight smart. Win – and one day, it could all be yours... if you survive.”

The monster made the rounds of the room. He stopped in front of Kyra, inspecting her body as though seeing it for the first time. “Stand up. Now turn around.”

She did, knowing resistance was futile. Bophe had found out early on punishing her did no good, so he’d begun picking a weaker female from the group and threatening to harm her instead. Kyra was reminded of that every time she caught a glimpse of the fresh scar Ceres bore on her left arm.

  “Bend over.”

She gritted her teeth as his rough hand slid along the back of her thigh and flipped up her skirt, baring her ass. “Soft and white and delicate.”

He gave her a vicious swat.

  “You’re up next, little human.”

She turned and gave him an icy stare. Bophe came in close, his mangled face only inches from hers. “You won your last battle. That means you’ve advanced to the final round. The alien males fight in teams of two for this match. You’ll be awarded to the winning team at the end of today’s event. They’ll be your new owners. By the way, it’s customary for them to claim you right then and there. The audience loves it.”

Kyra stared at him in shock. “No!”

“You got lucky in your first match.” He spat out the words. “If you don’t believe that, you can try and fight both of them instead – to the death. But, this time, I guarantee it will be your death.”

“So that’s my choice – get fucked or die? What about our wager? You said I’d get my freedom if I won today. You gave me your word.”

“You want freedom, Earther? Then fight. Lose… and you die. Win… and you’ll be claimed by the victors as their prize at the end of the competition. Stripped naked and fucked by them right there in the center of the arena w
hile thousands of spectators cheer them on.”

He gave her a cold smile, flashing the razor-sharp incisors he’d used to slash open the necks of his opponents back in the days before he’d battled his way out of the arena to become its owner.

“Don’t worry. You may not have to live even one more day as a slave. Some alien species are rougher than others. Half the time, my girls don’t survive the fucking. As for our wager, I’ve kept my word. Either way, you’ll be free of me.”

  Chapter One

  Six weeks earlier

She panicked, stomach churning as though the floor had just dropped out from under her.

Kyra concentrated on breathing slow and easy, knowing the sick feeling would disappear once the Luna reached full acceleration. Still, the sight of the enormous Tharan warship shrinking until it vanished in the void left her heart thumping wildly.

I made the right decision, she assured herself. I’ll be fine. It’s not as though I’m all alone on this ship with a squad of alien warriors. There are four other females aboard.

Yeah, four females from planets you’ve never even seen, her rational mind shot back. And two of them look scarier than these warriors.

“Lieutenant Banks – are you all right?” Jynn’s question interrupted her pathetic attempt to give herself a pep talk.

  “Yes, sir. I’m fine.”

“You haven’t given us the embarkation status report.”

Kyra swallowed the smart-ass response on the tip of her tongue. “I’m sorry, sir. I’m still adjusting to the differences in our standard protocols.” She rattled off a series of operation system readings from the console in front of her. Readings the Tharan officer in command had right in front of him as well – if he’d bothered to look.

She’d need every ounce of patience and tact she possessed to take orders from these aliens. The Luna was her baby. A Class IV Nebula Cruiser. As chief engineer, she knew every inch of the ship. She’d even designed some of its systems. It was superior to the Gemini, the vessel the aliens had been on, in every way. Their ship was like their Tharan race. Massive. Bulky. Dense.

Especially Jynn and Jax, the cyborg twins. It wasn’t fair they’d been awarded command of the Luna. They didn’t treat her with the deference she felt was her due. Seven feet tall, they towered over her. Made her feel like a child playing space explorer, instead of an officer in the Interstellar Federation.

  But they’re so damn hot!

Where had that come from? The thought popped into her brain unbidden. Probably sparked by a casual remark from her friend Cass. She’d spent only a short time with Commander Cassidy Randall, her former CO on the Luna, over the last two weeks before she took off on the Gemini with a pair of incredibly sexy alien warriors. Though she hadn’t come right out and said so, Kyra got the impression she was sleeping with them.

Goodness knows, Kyra wouldn’t blame her. Every Tharan she’d seen so far was more attractive than any of the male Earthers she knew – and they each had an identical twin. Rhynn and Rhom, Cass’s alien… What was it she called them? Oh yeah, her ‘Mates.’ That had to mean sex partners. Those two looked like gods from ancient mythology.

Her analytical mind had been keeping her awake for hours over the last few nights, trying to figure out how a three-way relationship might work. Did the twins know Cass was involved with both of them? They had to. Did they take turns coming to Cass’s room? Or did they do kinky alien sex things to her at the same time? Before long, trying to put it all into charts and schedules would give way to wicked fantasies, and she’d fall into a restless sleep filled with erotic dreams.

Though she couldn’t remember her dreams from last night, she woke up feeling horny and frustrated again. Thank goodness she’d been able to control her annoyance just now instead of snapping at her newly appointed superior officer. To be fair, Jynn hadn’t done anything to warrant a nasty remark. She knew what was expected of her. He and his twin had given her a thorough rundown on their operation protocols before the mission began. She’d even signed off on them. He’d just caught her in a moment of weakness.

Those moments didn’t come often. As head engineer, she’d supervised the cyborgs over the last two weeks while they played out endless simulations she created to cover every imaginable situation the Luna might face on this mission. She’d insisted they repeat each exercise if they made even the slightest mistake. If she had to hand over her ship to mirror-image aliens with a faint purple tinge to their skin, she was going to make damn sure she and the other passengers were as safe as they could be.

Thinking of the other passengers reminded her she hadn’t checked in on them yet. Now that the Luna was underway, they were probably anxious about what lay ahead.

“Sirs, I request permission to leave the bridge. I’d like to check on our passengers. Make sure they’re comfortable.”

Jax glanced at his twin. She suspected they shared some form of wordless communication, since she’d seen them do that so often. She’d ask a question, and their eyes would flick toward each other. Then one would answer for both.

Jynn inclined his head. “Certainly, Lieutenant. That’s an excellent idea. After all they’ve been through, getting underway again might bring up the trauma of their previous journey. I’m sorry we didn’t think of it ourselves.”

You’re cyborgs. What do machines know about feelings? Kyra suffered a pang of guilt over her immediate reaction. She shouldn’t judge them. Their handicap wasn’t their fault. At least, not completely. She’d heard a rumor that only one of the brothers had been injured in battle so severely he’d had to be transformed into a cyborg to save his life. She had no idea how the other one ended up half a machine.

“Thank you, sir. Sirs,” she amended, nodding first to one and then the other. She made a mental note to herself to get some clarification from the other Tharan twins in the crew about the proper way to address dual commanding officers. “I’ll give you a full report on them when I return.”

She headed down a drab gray corridor. The Luna was a relatively small cruiser. Jax and Jynn had insisted on giving each of the four alien females her own room in the crew’s quarters. Their team was bunking in the hold, where Kyra had been locked up along with the other captives before their rescue.

As commanding officers, the twins were sharing the room Cass had occupied when she was in charge. The one nearest the bridge. Right around the corner from Kyra’s current room.

She was aware of their presence every night. They kept appearing in her dreams. Sometimes on the bridge in their uniforms. Sleek black pants and deep blue shirts that fit like a second skin, so every move showed off the powerful muscles rippling underneath. Other times, they’d be standing next to a huge bed with their backs to her, naked, watching as Rhynn and Rhom made Cass scream in ecstasy. She’d wake up hot and sweaty, wishing one of them had turned around. What did alien cocks look like? Did cyborgs even have cocks?

She had only a vague idea of the medical procedures they’d been through. In uniform, they didn’t look any different than the other Tharans – except for a glowing disc under their shirts where an Earther male’s nipple would be. Jax’s disc was on his left side, Jynn’s on his right. Other than that, she had no clue how cyborg bodies might look.

This preoccupation with sex was all Cass’s fault. Cass and her hints about the hunky aliens. Kyra had been celibate for months even before joining the Luna’s crew. It wasn’t because the breakup with her fiancée had been so traumatic. Quite the opposite. Charles was always calm and rational. Infuriatingly so. He’d taken the ring back, given her a sad smile, and wished her well. How can a man in love have his bride-to-be call it off a month before the wedding and wish her well? He should have ranted and raved, demanded to know the reason why. Sworn he didn’t want to lose her. Vowed he’d do whatever it took to win her back. Charles had handled it as though he was in charge of customer service and she’d just returned a toaster.

She wanted something more. A deeper connection, like
the ones between the characters in the old novels she collected. Romance, adventure, breathless passion. None of which seemed to exist nowadays on Earth.

If she couldn’t have romance and passion, she’d settle for adventure. Kyra had volunteered to be one of the all-female crew for the maiden voyage on the new Federation ship she’d been helping to design. The Luna. Six months of training, followed by six months of deep space maneuvers designed to put the Luna through her paces. Adventure? Hah. It had turned out to be even more boring than being with Charles.

She’d begun to regret making such a big decision on the rebound. But then Cass had answered a distress call from an unknown Earth vessel. A transport craft filled with missionary families on their way to Proxima Minor. Their ship had broken down, and they’d drifted off course.

How did that old saying go? Be careful what you wish for. Kyra had had her fill of adventure ever since. The distress call was real enough. But the passengers weren’t missionaries. They were space pirates. They’d hijacked the Luna, taken her and the rest of the crew prisoner, and continued on their rampage through the galaxy. Conducting raids on peaceful planets, slaughtering their alien males. They’d dragged the females back to the Luna and locked them all in the hold of the ship, to be sold or traded for weapons and supplies.

Kyra pulled herself together as she rounded a corner and knocked on the first door she came to.

“Good morning.” Mika, the female from Daan 57, opened the door. Tall and rail thin, with the distinctive Daanan bony ridges crisscrossing her skull instead of hair, it wasn’t surprising that the Earther pirates hadn’t considered her attractive enough to sell off. Her mother had been traded away as slave labor right after they were taken, to cook for miners on a passing asteroid.
